Bio

Mateusz Chorążewicz is a saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. He has been in contact with music since the age of six, when he started learning to play the piano. He graduated from the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk in Maciej Obara’s jazz saxophone class.

Leader of the Hippocampus Ex project. The band’s debut single entitled “Sunrise” was released in January 2023. The recording featured foreign musicians Nick Sinckler, Francesca Prattico, Egor Remmer and Micko Damnjanovski.

He is also co-founder of the group Bipolar Order. In October 2019, the band’s debut album of fully original material was released by the Tricity-based label Allegro Records.

Jazz enthusiast. He loves the hardbop vibes of Benny Golson, although he is also not averse to the oriental sounds of Yusef Lateef or the open improvised music of Mats Gustafsson.

He has participated in numerous workshops led by prominent figures from both the Polish, European and world music scenes, including Samuel Blaser, Pawel Gusnar, Piotr Wojtasik, Ed Partyka, Jim Black, Ole Morten Vågan, Jon Fält, Tom Arthurs, Dominik Wania, Zohar Fresco, Peter Hertmans, Andy Middleton, Andreas Lang, John Escreet, Thomas Stronen, Sidsel Endresen, Kit Downes, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten or Wayne Horvitz.

Hippocampus Ex

Bipolar Order

Hippocampus Ex is a music project founded in 2023 on the initiative of saxophonist and composer Mateusz Chorazewicz. The group’s original work is an attempt to understand how people perceive and interpret the world.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain that is responsible for creating and processing memories, acquiring knowledge and feeling emotions. The unconscious processes taking place in it can lead to the modification of memories and even their distortion. Is it then possible to know and objectively describe reality? Is human unjustly condemned to a reproductive experience of the world? Can he leave the vicious circle of unconsciousness?

Living by experiencing the world – this is what the members of Hippocampus Ex teach us (and themselves). The different life and cultural experiences of artists from different corners of the world mean that more paths are available to us. More threads that we can grasp. Whether all of them intertwine in one labyrinth of the world, we have yet to find out for ourselves…

Two equal leaders – a young father and a Kashubian. Completely different inspirations – on one hand today’s jazz scene of New York, on the other folk music with elements of open improvisation. A clash of two different energies that evolves into something completely new and unknown.

Bipolar Order is a Polish jazz band based in Warsaw, formed in 2018 by saxophonist Mateusz Chorążewicz and guitarist Jakub Żołubak. The group’s repertoire consists of original compositions of both musicians, whereas the uniqueness results from a conception in which each instrument is treated equally, which emphasizes the unity and coherence of the music.

Discography

Hippocampus Ex – Sunrise

1. Sunrise 4:28

Mateusz Chorążewicz (Poland) – tenor saxophone, clarinet, EFX
Nick Sinckler (USA) – vocal
Egor Remmer (Ukraine) – trombone
Micko Damnjanovski (Macedonia) – tuba
Francesca Prattico (Italy) – drums

Composed & Produced by Mateusz Chorążewicz
Mixed & mastered  Jeremiasz Hendzel

The vocal layer of the song is the poem ‘Darkness’ by Cyprian Kamil Norwid in an English translation by Jerzy Pietrkiewicz. Artists from various countries took part in the recording of the single.

Sunrise becomes a parable about the light that illuminates the darkness like the flame of a candle and the man who can light up the world around him. The decision to step into the light changes reality, but it requires courage and understanding of timeless values. Which ones? This question is worth seeking the answer to by listening to the sounds of the Hippocampus Ex group’s single.
